The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

[Unfortunately after a 10 month run, my daily Gimme News post at CP's Gimme Noise blog has run its course on the site. In keeping up with the spirit of putting the spotlight on the local goings on in the Twin Cities I figured it best to continue things back over on Culture Bully... hopefully there's something here that catches your eye. High five.]

Does Bob Dylan deserve a Nobel Prize? The Best American Poetry says yes! Unfortunately it might have to wait until after the dust settles following the release of Dylan’s new record Christmas in the Heart. Stereogum directs us to a track from the disc, “Must Be Santa,” which is a polka-meets-Tiny Toons mixture of absurdity and Yuletide cheer. Maybe next year Bob, maybe next year.

Thrash music is about as subtle as a punch in the mouth — or a dozen punches in two seconds. During the 1980s, however, a pair of now-legendary bands, Husker Du and Metallica, transformed thrash into a thing of beauty without sacrificing any of its blunt force or blitzkrieg speed.

I appreciate the idea that both Metallica and Husker Du helped shape the face of music in the ’80s, but reflecting on the latter as a key element in the thrash scene to add depth to a comparison between Bob Mould and Metallica playing across the street from one another last night is a bit of a stretch. [MinnPost]

But is Metallica even bringing the heat these days? Apparently so…

If there was a low point, it was the group’s Led Zeppelin-esque ballad ‘Nothing Else Matters,’ if only because it brought the otherwise breakneck speed to a screeching halt so Hetfield and Hammett could indulge their inner Page and Plant. Then again, middle-aged guys like Metallica need to take a little breather every now and again.” [Pioneer Press]

Like President Obama going out on an international diplomacy trip, Metallica’s first tour stop in the Twin Cities in five years seemed to be all about kissing and making up. Which of course meant it was a brutal, ugly, deafening concert.” [Star Tribune]
