TC Spotlight: Metallica & Peter Wolf Crier
3 Minute Egg takes a detailed tour of This is Not For You, a local collaboration between theater director Jeremey Catterton and Peter Wolf Crier. Described as “a theatrical multimedia staging of an album,” the installation contrasts music and theater throughout a variety of locations in a St. Paul home. More information on the project, which opened last night, can be found at Cake in 15.

Bob Dylan’s Christmas in the Heart was released this week, and unlike the string of mind-bombs he’s dropped on us this past decade, it’s received a laundry list of less than favorable reviews. Here is a sample of what people have to say:
James Reed of the Boston Globe: “A Tex-Mex melody spruces up “Must Be Santa,’’ whose tongue-twisting chorus gives Dylan his most vigorous vocal performance in recent memory. Still, a question lingers throughout that song and the whole album: Must it be Dylan singing this stuff?”
Stephen Thomas Erlewine of the All Music Guide: “Dylan doesn’t really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band.”
Jon Bream of the Star Tribune: “At times, it’s painful to listen to, especially when he’s singing loud and forcefully, as he does on several tracks. Some of the sustained notes make it sound like he’s gargling while singing.”
Or if you’d rather dip into the bipolar extremities of the iTunes crowd as Minnesota Public Radio did, you’ll find a cross-section of listeners who either really love it or really hate it.
Thankfully all hope isn’t lost however, as Charlie Sexton’s return to Dylan’s band has seemingly lit a fire under the legendary musician. Rolling Stone has coverage of the show of Tuesday night’s show at the Hollywood Palladium.

love what you’ve done with the TC recap Chris!
-the Metallica recordings sound simply AWESOME. bright, crisp, heavy as fuck. it’s a big bummer maria got back to us only 5 minutes or so before showtime (maybe we’ll have better luck in 2014..). were these recorded off a rig or the soundboard?
-can’t believe how polarizing the bob dylan reviews are. i’ll have to give it a listen. he’s sounding more like tom waits than i ever remember.
thanks dude – listened through the Metallica recordings last night… man, am I ever kicking myself for not bucking up the cash (though it’s a lot of cash to hand over right now)… no idea how these were recorded.
i’m on the side that thinks the Dylan Christmas album is a turd in a stocking… for what it’s worth
