Warpaint “Exquisite Corpse EP” Review
November 12, 2009 – 12:00 pm | 2 Comments

There are many reasons this album succeeds, but in the end it comes down to the fact that the band, like the xx, is doing more with less. In stripping all the fat, while leaving just the necessary components, Warpaint has created one of the best debut albums of this year.

The Dead Weather: New Music from Jack White

Roughly 150 people recently attended the grand re-opening of Third Man Records in Nashville, and roughly 150 people were treated with a gift like no other. The gift? The crowd that night was party to the first ever public performance from the Dead Weather. The catch? The Dead Weather are a band comprised of Jack White (The White Stripes/Raconteurs), Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs/Greenhornes). Not a bad gift if I do say so myself.

Completely flipping the script on those who thought White was in need of some much-needed rest after his tired performance on Conan O’Brien’s final Late Show (myself included), White sounds anything but in the band’s first two songs. The group’s lead single, “Hang You From The Heavens,” rolls by with a harder, snarling guitar, and a grind that offers up the perfect soundtrack for a two-day tequila binge. The song’s b-side is an oddball compared to “Heavens,” for it’s a churning cover of Gary Numan’s “Are Friends Electric?” that is plastered in reverb and sounds a bit like the Raconteurs—had the band been around in the mid-1960s. A full length release is expected for June.

  • Good stuff. Isn’t it weird how Jack White albums always come out in June?

  • Chris DeLine says:

Yes and no… the more important question is: why do you have this information in your brain?

  • K Sikes says:

“White sounds anything but in the band’s first two songs. The group’s lead single, “Hang You From The Heavens,” rolls by with a harder, snarling guitar, and a grind that offers up the perfect soundtrack for a two-day tequila binge.”

Jack isn’t playing guitar in this band. He’s banging on the drums.

  • Chris DeLine says:

…yup… doesn’t sing on the single either, doesn’t take away from the energy the song exudes (drums included).

  • Mona says:

I wish Jack would just focus all of his energy on a new White Stripes CD.

  • Fid3l says:

Second that… If he won’t play guitar or sing on the new band he should be doing another stripes album!

  • I’m not mad at “Hang You From The Heavens” or Alison Mosshart .

  • Dead Leaf says:

Stripes are done. After the Conan performance i felt that way and this just puts that last nail in the coffin. Too bad…

  • Kyle says:

Ok, the stripes aren’t done! Read something

  • Kalli says:

Are you kidding me? Stripes are FAR from over. Jack is phenominal in every single thing he does, and I am on the other side of the fence in watching his Conan performance.
If you think way, way far back to the Stripes’ old days, tired is practically a muse.
Opinions, opinions. But either way, this brilliant man has barely scratched his surface.

  • Canucklehead says:

Can’t wait for the whole c.d. Just got tickets for Vancouver’s Saturday night show at the Commodore Ballroom. Best place in town for a live show.
