The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. When not making Frank Miller-esque videos with Timbaland The Hives apparently spent a bit of time recording a few tracks of their own, this time around for the follow up to 2004’s mediocre Tyrannosaurus Hives entitled The Back and White Album. The album’s lead single, “Tick Tick Boom,” should be receiving quite a bit of face time among the kids as the track is currently being featured in a Nike Finish Line commercial and will be included as a part of the soundtrack for the upcoming Madden ‘08 video game. The single is set to officially drop on the same day as the game, August 14th, and from an early listen it sounds a bit closer to the band’s older material than their last album. Let’s just hope The Black and White Album doesn’t have any direct correlation to the band’s recent decision to act as tour openers for the god-awful Maroon 5.
