The Honeydogs “Good Fight”

“Good Fight,” a new song from the upcoming Honeydogs Sunshine Committee EP, could very well be the mantra for the long standing Minneapolis based band. While many bands and trends have come and gone, the Honeydogs have been a pop music institution in the Twin Cities for over 14 years. Their latest EP collects the usual suspects, with literate pop songs mixing with the white boy funk that lead singer/songwriter Adam Levy has been playing with his Hookers and Blow cover band over the last few years. “Good Fight” is one of the strongest tracks (in reality, all six songs are great) and finds the band playing some mellow and plaintive rock. No matter what the song really is about (and I am guessing it is a more serious subject as Levy works in the social work field), when I hear Levy singing about his “glass jaw” and not throwing in the towel or conceding, I can’t help but think about the band. Like a lot of good things, they have not always gotten the credit they may have deserved (especially in regards to their classic album 10,000 Years) and could have went the way of millions of bands over the years. Levy, in a voice that sounds slightly like Mike Doughty at times, sings about “exceptions to the rule” and near the end lets loose with the mournful plea “it’s not a lost cause.” If it means writing more songs like “Good Fight” and records like Sunshine Committee, then lets hope Levy and crew will keeping fighting the good fight for a very long time.
