The Mae Shi @ Pitchfork Music Festival 2009

Mae Shi Pitchfork Jon Behm 01

My first time seeing the spectacle that is the Mae Shi coincided with the group playing its final show before splitting up into two bands: the Mae Shi and the Signals. The three piece group, which was joined by various friends (including, strangely enough, a rapper near the end of the set) played to a decent-sized early afternoon crowd. While the scream-o/angular music that the band played left something to be desired, the Mae Shi made up for it with some solid showmanship. As usual, the group brought its trusty parachute to give the crowd an extra dose of entertainment during the set. Instead of playing underneath it however, it was simply tossed out to the crowd, but the dedicated fans had little trouble figuring out what to do.

The set, which consisted of some Mae Shi tunes and some Signals songs was entertaining, but in the end didn’t leave me too disappointed that this would be the band’s final show. While I was under the impression that the split was amicable, apparently I was wrong. I just wonder if there is going to be a custody battle over the parachute since it seems like that is probably the most memorable thing that either band has to offer.

“I just wonder if there is going to be a custody battle over the parachute since it seems like that is probably the most memorable thing that either band has to offer.” — ZING!

  • The love of music or sound seems to be missed by this review. This performance brought tears of joy to my eyes seeing a show about what you love. Keep it up Mae Shi you made a fan there.

And the pretentious F#@$ that wrote this needs to go back to reviewing Pearl Jam concerts.

Rock on and I will keep following.
