The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. The Phenomenal Handclap Band “You’ll Disappear”

I am occasionally guilty of judging a book by its cover. When I first heard the name “Phenomenal Handclap Band” I thought to myself “it sounds like a bunch of hippies with bongos and handclapping and such.” Don’t ask me why. I couldn’t have possibly been more wrong though as the New York band plays anthemic disco dance pop with generous dollops of rock and retro funk sprinkled on top. Their single “You’ll Disappear” should be hitting dance floors soon with its potent synthesizer beats and deadpan female vocals that recall the aloofness of uber-cool bands like Glass Candy and the Golden Filter. Though their sound seems suspiciously geared towards today’s zeitgeist of 1980’s retro dance music, don’t let that dissuade you from giving them a listen. They do it better than most similar bands on the scene today.
