Love the Stripes… but this was weak sauce.

  • I thought they should have ended Conan’s show with something more rocking but I like this song. He was lucky to get them to come at all.

  • the white stripes are good, but that song? they should’ve played seven nation army. oh and that song sounded like shit. the white stripes suck dick live!

  • you’re aLL crazy- that was a beautifuL performance

  • It’s fitting to close Conan with a bittersweet, mellow song. Personally, I would have gone with I’m Bound to Pack it Up, only because, well, he’s packing it up, but a classic performance nonetheless.

  • yezzir, me ipod says cheers!

  • Are you serious? This is a band? They were just awful! She can’t carry a tune in a bucket. I would’ve thought Conan would’ve gone out with a talented, known band, but this? Oh well, if that’s what he wanted. And to Roc, who is surprised Conan was lucky to get them to come at all….you’re kidding, right? They sound like they’d JUMP at the chance for a gig.

  • That song, while not nearly being the best song in their catalog, was fitting, but the arrangement was a bit awkward and seemed under rehearsed a bit. But the end of the song, where just Jack is singing, was a tender moment where Jack seemed to be singing directly to Meg. I’m sure they’ve drifted apart over the years (what with Jack’s marriage and his child, not to mention the fact that they no longer perform together) so it was touching-and a fitting end to Conan’s show, who seemed genuinely moved by them playing on his last show, just not the best arrangement/performance.

And bitty, the White Stripes, when they are on, are one of the best live bands going-you know not what you speak.

  • awesome!
Thanks for posting this – I suck for forgetting the Stripes were going to be on Conan last night.

My two cents on the song: I think Jack’s continuing his Dylan influence by rearranging his songs. Not as good as the original version, but it was an interesting one-off.

  • “Meg White… you’re alright… in fact I think you’re kind of swell!”

I think it should have been more upbeat also

  • I like the song but that was the worst performance ever. Jacks voice
was shot. Get some rest dude.

  • Since Conan has said that this is his favorite White Stripes song i think it was fitting. But i agree that the performance was a bit off.

  • It definitely sounded to me like Jack’s vocal cords were shredded from overuse–I know from personal experience what that can do to your ability to sing even the simplest things. The only medicine for that is to rest them for several days or weeks. I didn’t know that song was Conan’s favorite, I assumed they played it because Jack’s voice was blown out and he was forced to keep things mellow. I shudder to think what something like Hotel Yorba or Icky Thump would have sounded like.

The only reason I wasn’t completely turned off by the disappointing performance was the fact that the Stripes have proven themselves to me again and again over the past several years to be an exhilarating live act.

  • you can see a pretty good explanation of this version of this song at http://www.musicforperfectpeople.com
it was actually a pretty sweet tribute to conan.

  • Okay i’m a huge fan of the stripes and personally would have perferred something more rock-oriented. BUT Jack’s voice was obviously gone, probably due to sickness or just overwork. And you know they wanted to come play on Conan and it’s not anybody’s fault really that his voice happened to be gone just at this time. SO for you all you people saying the stripes suck live, why don’t you just think about this for a second? honestly, it was a good performance; definitely not the best but it was good and i’m not gonna complain.

  • And i’ll be done with this after i say this. A little more than halfway through Jack looks to me like he’s just getting a little choked up just by the look in his eyes. And shortly after Meg gives him this look and a smile and you KNOW they still care about eachother and… yeah. so just giving my input on the performance =) And yeah i agree with Erik T. about the end of the song. That really seems like it is directed toward Meg as just… A gesture. Haha.. alright i’m done =)

  • That was one of the sorriest performances by accomplished musicians that I’ve ever seen. Pick any two kids out of a juvenile detention center, have them shoot up some speedballs and hand them guitars and I’m certain that they’ll perform better than that.

  • It does seem lil off its one of my fave songs from them. I strongly believe most people gave Napoleon Dynamite a chance because of this song in the intro grabbed them so hard(a bit of a over statement and exaggeration I know). Although this version was slowed down as a dramatic finale it was sloppy for a live band that has performed in so many degrees higher.
