Theresa Andersson “Birds Fly Away”

Theresa Andersson hummingbird go

The Current hipped me to Swedish native Theresa Andersson the other day and I can’t seem to get one of her tunes out of my head. Even though she has lived in Louisiana for almost the last 20 years, Andersson could possibly be the next big thing to come out of Sweden (the quota seems to demand at least one a year). The American influence definitely shows up in the doo-wop influenced sound of “Birds Fly Away,” which lands on the poppier side of Andersson’s typically folksy sound. It’s a relentlessly upbeat song, though Andersson’s smoky alto often carries with it quite a bit of sentimentality. The quick drum beat, wandering finger pickings, and veritable orchestra of other sounds move the track along nicely though. It’s definitely a fine choice from the Current’s new morning hosts Jill Riley and Steve Seel, though in all honestly sometimes their show creeps me out (their chipperness at such an early hour seems deeply unnatural).
