Lists and lists and lists and lists were the popular topic in mashups this week. Team9 compiled a solid set for the second annual Stereogum MySplice list, featured are mashes combining the likes of Band of Horses, M.I.A., Jay-Z, PJ Harvey and Arcade Fire. I myself am partial to the Feist vs. New Young Pony Club mashup, myself.

Other lists include those by my friends over at Mashuptown, producer Simon Idol’s, and A plus D’s always fantastic Best of Bootie compilation. One thing that two of these three have in common that I can agree with is the inclusion of Copycat’s “Fade to Pretty Vacant.” I stuck with Copycat’s “Knowing the Rhythm is Right” on my year end list, but this could have just as easily been on there.

One final year end list, of sorts, is an exclusive mix that DJ Earworm put together. The producer’s “United States of Pop” is a fantastic summation of the “twenty five most popular songs of 2007 in the USA, according to Billoard.” At its best it’s ambitious and quite honestly not a bad listen, though I must admit that cramming twenty five songs into about five minutes is, well…forced.

Not that he ever left, but I’m pumped about dj BC’s return with two very soulful mashes; one backed by Bob Marley, the other by The Temptations (highly recommended). Honestly, they’re the best tracks I’ve heard from BC in quite some time.

ABX & DJ STV SLV deliver a few great tracks kicking off 2008 in a big way. The first track by ABX, which is highly recommended, combines The Cool Kids with Le Loup. The second by DJ STV SLV, whose recent First Avenue set I regret missing, is just as good combining delicate indie darling St. Vincent with equally delicate lyrics of deceased gangsta rapper Mac Dre.

The ever-consistent ToToM, whose notorious With Boots Nine Inch Nail’s mashup album landed him in my 2006 list of the year’s best mashups, returns by accepting Trent Reznor’s invitation of the NIN Remix Project. This past week alone he was able to put two solid NIN tracks together in addition to some other interesting tracks featuring Bloc Party, Roni Size and this, the best rock-based “Ayo Technology” mashup I may have heard thus far.

Kiss Atlanta points to a fantastic mashup by Grizz Le Beast. The producer’s MySpace has been taken down so I don’t know much about ‘em, but any way you look at it “Rock It Out” is a club-ready, danceable track.

And finally, Sugartown points out a bootleg that I can’t believe I slept on (though I can’t figure out just how long I’ve in fact slept on it…it’s been around since at least Oct. ‘07 from what I can tell). Combining Battles with M.I.A. may seem logical for the likes of The Hood Internet, but Diplo take his delivery in a whole new direction.

One Response to “This Week in Mashups (01/05/2008)”

  1. DJ BC is always reliable for top-notch mash-ups. His buddy Lenlow is too.
