The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

I’ve been sleeping on posting this brilliant album since late last year, but plain and simple American Zeppelin is the best American Gangster mashup album out there. I’ve long since been a huge fan of the first great Jay-Z mashup album, Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album, so I asked Doc Rok if that had any effect on him as he put this together. “The Grey Album had an influence in the sense that I knew about it existing, but I did it really more so just to have a theme. I’ve been doing remixes for a long time and this was the first opportunity to do an entire new album project in one shot.” The success thus far has been phenomenal, with a few traffic heavy outlets jumping on the bandwagon including Perez Hilton.

When I asked how this all came about Doc Rok laid things out, “I spent three days working on it and it all just came together perfectly with the tempos and everything so I figured I’d just put it out. This isn’t my first release so I wasn’t even really thinking too much about it, just put it out and the next thing you know I’m getting calls from all kinds of people asking about it, it hit 18,000 downloads the first day out and the ball just started rolling from there.” Don’t miss out on hearing this album )which can be downloaded in its entirety from DJ Doc Rok’s site).

This past week The Hood Internet continued their ridiculous streak of laying down solid mashes by dropping three more; ABX’s tracks in particular should heard as they shift away from indie-beat and play out with club-ready beats.

Following up the recent MySplice ‘07 project, team9 combines a superstar I know a ton about with a band that I’ve never even heard of with fantastic results.

Speaking of producers that are on a role, dj BC can’t be stopped here in 2008, this time around combining Robbie Dupree with the X-Ecutioners.

While it doesn’t boast quite enough Iggy for my liking, DJ Lobsterdust’s “Wanna Be Your Alala” is still brilliant.

A track from my friend DJ MDSB’s upcoming mashup album proves No Snake Attached to be quite promising.

It’s been a while since I’ve heard anything from Irn Mnky, this time around taking a stab at the Jay-Z acapella album that’s floating around out there. The resulting A Very British American Gangster is a bit hit or miss on the whole but still pretty good. My favorite track by far is this mashup placing Jay’s “Pray” over a remixed loop of that infamous Rolling Stones track “The Last Time.”
