The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

This Week in Mashups 03/15/2008

I’m only posting this with the contingency that you, as the reader/viewer/interneter, watch Jay Smooth’s commentary of the mashup he made in addition to this short video mashup. Historically brilliant in the public forum, this year Jay has introduced more of a playful feel to his vlog, and this “Sexual Eruption”/”What We Want” mashup isn’t meant to act as anything more than a casual diversion to his ongoing social analysis (sidenote: fame may not validate the wave of cryticism that Ms. Dupre has received, but fame and a stack of cash certainly go a long way…terrible of me to say, but honest…). If nothing else, David Lee Roth’s isolated “Runnin’ with the Devil” vocal track has introduced a bit of dazzling flair into the world of mashups…but actually blending it and a backing track with any success has proven quite difficult. All things considered, this video mashing Diamond Dave with The Beatles’ “Drive My Car” may be the best attempt out there. (via BoingBoing)

Even while down rocking the entire city of Austin during SXSW, The Hood Internet’s ABX somehow finds time to put out new material: this week combining MGMT’s “Kids” with Lil Kim’s “(When Kim Say) Can You Hear Me Now?”

Mashuptown delivered come new Pheugoo this week, combining the useless talents (I’m entitled to my opinion) of Sean Kingston with The Commodores’ classic “Easy.” Somehow, I can’t help but think that Mike Patton could have recorded a better version of this song entirely by himself.

After my reintroduction to his efforts last week, DJ Topcat released seven mashups covering acts from the likes of Gym Class Heroes to House of Pain, from Belinda Carlisle to Tom Petty…this week TC definitely delivered proof that the waters of his catalog run deep.
