This Week In Mashups (04/19/2008)

Submitted by Chris DeLine on April 19, 2008 – 3:31 pm4 Comments

ToToM released the first of an expected three Nine Inch Nails mashup albums this week, all apart of his Bootleg is Resistance project. This series comes as a follow-up to 2006’s With Boots album, the first of its kind from the NIN-obsessed producer. This initial offering of tracks are an odd assortment of unlikely combinations that at times work well and at times miss completely. As should be expected of ToToM however, there are a number of gems (and for more music, including the ridiculous combination of NIN’s “My Violent Heart” with Feist’s “1, 2, 3, 4″ head over to the official site).

It’s almost comical as to how well DJ Schmolli’s latest mashup combines M.I.A. with Bon Jovi. There are few things I can’t stand more than that god-awful song from Young Guns II, but giving it a refreshing context makes it slightly more appealing. Slightly.

The Hood Internet delivered a double dose of mashups this week with both ABX and DJ STV SLV contributing some solid music. Here, STV SLV’s track combines Webbie with Waxploitation’s most recent addition Black Moth Super Rainbow for an utterly trippy bootleg.

From the good people at Mashup Industries, “Years ago someone named Dangermouse took The White Album from The B*****s and Jay-Z’s Black Album and created The Grey Album… 2008 – It’s payback time! Mashup Industries’ Clivester produces The Odd American Gangster. Created from Gnarls Barkley’s new album The Odd Couple and Jay-Z’s latest production American Gangster. The result is a unique Hip Hop album that features 11 tracks from both albums combined to an almost natural production.”

While this may not be the best American Gangster mashup album out there (see: DJ Doc Rok), it’s not too shabby.

And lastly, Dunproofin’ examines the similarities between two songs from some of the ’90s biggest acts, “Ever realized that Faith No More’s ‘Epic’ & Primal Scream’s ‘Loaded’ are virtually the same track – one has an ascending chorus, the other has a descending chorus?” Sounds pretty close to me.
