Tori Amos @ State Theatre

From the moment she walked onto the State Theatre’s stage, Tori Amos had the crowd hanging on her every lyric. She started the night off with “Give,” the opening track from her latest album, Dangerously Attracted to Sin. From that she went right into electrifying performances of “Raspberry Swirl” and “Cornflake Girl.” The latter never fails to disappoint live, and that certainly rang true on this night.

Before the show started, I struck up a conversation with my seat mate, an older man named Chris, who told me that he had tuned Amos’ piano that afternoon. He said he had never heard her music, but he wanted to stick around for the show after his work was done. Three songs in, I leaned over and asked him how the piano sounded, and he said “great.” He followed that up with “she’s very erotic,” which made me smile.

Amos then played “Siren,” “Pandora’s Aquarium,” an amazingly hot version of “Concertina,” “Space Dog,” and one of my favorites “Doughnut Song.”

The next set of songs were a smattering from six different albums, including “Silent All these Years” and “Precious Things” which are always crowd favorites, and a fantastic version of “Talula.” She closed out the show with “Strong Black Vine,” also from the new album, which left the crowd standing, screaming, and wanting more.

Luckily Amos didn’t disappoint, and she came back for a three-song encore of “Body and Soul,” “Take to the Sky,” and “Big Wheel,” one of my favorite performances of the night.

I’ve been lucky enough to see Tori Amos live many times, and this was one of her better performances. I was a little surprised that she only played three songs from the new album, but I loved that she played such a variety of songs from so many albums. She didn’t speak much at all to the audience in between songs, which surprised me a bit, but on this night, she didn’t need to—she said plenty with her music and her sheer presence.

I really enjoyed reading your review about the show. Precious Things and the Doughnut Song were my two favorites of the night. And thanks for the set list, I enjoyed Body and Soul during the encore but didn’t know the song title.
