Ahhh Jon Jon - yes and no, my friend. It's easy to shrug the album off as just another solid album from a band that we've come to expect solid albums from - but the idea here is to take the album out of context. For instance, imagine if an unknown band had released 'Dear Science' - note for note - how amazing would that seem? But given that we were somewhat expecting brilliance prior to its release, it's sort of easy to shrug off. I love 'Return To Cookie Mountain' as well, but I can't marginalize this album simply because I've previously come to know the band in a different way - it's just too damn good.

While Dear Science is good, it's nowhere near RTCM,that said it's still cool. The Saul Williams-like rapping on "Dancing Choose" wasn't expected, though it did grow on me. There's something missing, perhaps the element of surprise, its almost like yup, TVTR have a new record (shoulders hunched),I wonder what it will sound like? Ah, TVOTR.

Very thought out review. It's so easy to make comparisons but the best comment of your review is that as we evolve and change as people so does everything else around us, including the music artists we love. I haven't heard the entire album yet but plan to as soon as I get home today. Your review only made me more excited than I alredy was!

Agreed. I've noticed a trend online the past few years (and within myself for that matter) to instinctively make lists. Lists of everything...Top 10 anythings, Best of whatevers and so on. When 'Return To Cookie Mountain' was released...without giving it a second thought I labeled it one of the year's best...certainly one of my favorites. And after giving 'Dear Science' the same treatment listening rotation that you have, I feel the same - this is one of the best records I've heard this year.

Personally, it is my favorite TVOTR record they have made. Smart, funky and cohesive...I love it from start to finish. It has been in my constant rotation for a couple weeks and I am fairly confident that it will be at the top (if not on the top) of my year end list.

good review.

TVOTR has always been TVOTR. Not Pink Floyd or Ramones or whatever. They are willing to compromise fans to make music they feel represents them now. I admire that.

Wow, I am listening to this album right now, and it is really brilliant. Truly one of my favorite bands.

And um, "I liked Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes better" (than RTCM) ..

Great review!

I completely agree. I worry that too many fans and critics will not get the evolution that this album represents - not only for TVOTR, but for an entire genre. They could save modern music from the dross that it is mired in and the categories that are rigidly applied by critics. Kudos on a brilliant review.
