Favre'in It

I was thinking that an alternate title to this post could have been “Favre’in’ It,” but I couldn’t quite figure out if “distancing oneself from others through repeated indecisiveness and inconsistent behaviour” fully covers the breadth of what I thought the term should mean. The flip-side is that I don’t really think my situation bears much of a resemblance to Brett Favre’s, I just thought it was kind of a funny term (and the previous definition is more condemning than it is humorous). Plus, if I made any sort of stupid joke I know that Purple Jesus would be sending me a serious hate-text in no time flat. That’s just where our relationship is right now.

So to make a long story short: in January things changed; now it’s March, and things are changing again.

I’ve taken off from Minneapolis and have now settled back in my hometown of Calgary. And after an extended break from having music bloggery on the mind 24/7, I’ve started to build an appreciation for the situation I’ve moved into. There is an eclectic music scene here and things only seem to be developing and expanding further with each week I’m exploring things.

While I really had no idea of what was going to happen with the site, this just seems like the right thing to do right now; maybe that’s where the Favre’in’ it idea comes into play.

Anyways, here’s what’s changed:

Jon, Josh and Adam have kickstarted a new site in Minneapolis (Reviler) and I highly recommend checking it out as they offer a terrific selection of local and national content as well as unmatched coverage of Twin Cities concerts. Erik continues to cover music through a variety of international outlets & updates on his recent work can be found on either his Twitter or Tumblr pages. Guante continues to hustle in promoting his recent collaboration with Big Cats!, Tim has returned to posting at Mind Inversion, and I imagine Ryan is off partying somewhere rad like Mexico or something. He hasn’t returned my faxes in weeks.

Since the last update to the site in January I changed the layout of the site to reflect something I had my eye on about a year ago when CB first went magazine-style. I just liked that it was a slightly more minimalistic, less intrusive, and generally just easier on the eyes. But now it also offers visual accompaniment to all sorts of archive, tag, and general searches which I hope will help give people a more enjoyable experience with the site. Also, I’ve “renovated” the archives (I’ll be finished in the next day or two) to help bring a better experience to posts from the past; ie: removing a lot of the site’s less relevant archives (dating back to 2005) and updating posts (tags, images, formatting, etc.) with the focus being on creating more meaningful and less cluttered searches (album reviews, interviews, concert coverage, mashups, Influenza, Four TakesLil Wayne—you get the picture). Oh, and for the first time since 2006 Culture Bully’s not sticking with neon pink and green. I think that change was a long time coming.

Also, now when commenting on Culture Bully you can add your Twitter ID in addition to, or instead of, your web address. I just thought that’d be a nice touch. And if you’d like to share individual posts (maybe even this one) there are some new buttons that will hopefully help with that sort of thing (the Twitters, the Facebooks, etc.).

As for what the site will become: who knows. Maybe it’ll be like CB1.0, only with less pictures of Britney Spears & Scarlett Johansson’s cleavage. Or maybe more. There’s a balance to be found there, I just haven’t quite figured that out quite yet.

In the meantime, thanks for checking the site out again (or for the first time).

-Chris

    Welcome back Chris!

  • Good to see Culture Bully back in action.

  • Faaaaaaaavretastic!

  • I feel the site had been lacking in the cleavage department as a whole the past few years. I know you don’t remember it, but i still have pre-CB1.0 (aka “I Hate Airbeds”) as my bookmark label, for continuity’s sake.

  • In fact I do remember it – saw this when I was fixing things up:

    And I still hate airbeds.
