Water is one of the greatest resources that we have here on earth. And while many of us have immediate access to clean, fresh water, there are many people throughout the world that don’t. So to both respect the potable water that you have and save yourself some money on your water bill each month, it’s wise to look for ways that you can conserve water as much as possible.
To help you see how this can be done, here are three ways to waste less water during the day.
Reuse Your Greywater
While you might not have your tap running when you don’t need it during the day, there likely are other ways that you’re wasting water during the day.
One of the ways you could better use water, according to Carol Crotta, a contributor to Houzz and Forbes.com, is to put every drop of water that you bring out of your faucet to use as many times as possible. While most people allow water to just run down the drain when it’s been used from things like washing dishes or vegetables, you can actually reuse this greywater or other wastewater for other purposes. Arguably the best way to use this water is to catch it and use it to water your garden or other plants that you have around your property. Just make sure you use it that day to keep harmful bacteria from growing in that water before you can use it.
Use Water-Saving Appliances and Fixtures
You likely have quite a few appliances in your home that use water. Additionally, when you turn on your tap, shower, or use a toilet, you’re also flushing water through your pipes. However, you may be using more water than is actually necessary.
To combat this, Manon Verchot, a contributor to TreeHugger.com, suggests that you get water-saving appliances or fixtures installed in your home. This could include dual-flush toilets, low-flow showerheads, and a dishwasher or clothes washer that use less water than traditional models.
Look Out For Leaks
Even when you don’t actively have water running in your home, you could still be wasting water if there’s any kind of leaking going on.
If you notice that you have a leak anywhere, which might make itself known when your water bill rises, it’s best to address this issue as soon as you can. And since the EPA shares that a small leak can add up incredibly quickly, you’ll want to take action immediately to keep from wasting more water than you already have.
If you and your family are trying to waste less watering during the day within your home, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you achieve this goal.
